Administration representatives and Republican members have hailed the execution of a 2020 US drug trafficking indictment, while Democratic voices have decried the operation as a violation of the nation's self-determination.
Official Reactions: Celebration and Justification
The US Attorney General stated that Maduro and his wife face allegations in a New York court, encompassing plots related to drug terrorism, drug smuggling, and firearms violations. "The defendants will in due course experience the complete wrath of US justice on American soil," the statement continued. It concluded by thanking the president for seeking justice and saluting the courageous armed forces for a successful operation.
"Maduro is NOT the legitimate leader of Venezuela... He is the head of a narco-terror cartel... and he is facing charges for pushing narcotics into the America," stated the US Secretary of State.
The Vice-President reinforced this position, saying that the administration had offered several chances for de-escalation but was clear that drug trafficking must end. "He is the latest person to learn that the President keeps his word," the remarks added.
Opposition Condemnation: Charges of Deception and Warmongering
On the other side, Democratic response was immediate and critical. Senators accused the administration of transforming an anti-narcotics campaign into a regime-change venture.
