Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
