Cadillac Utilizes Apollo Program Strategy to Build Unit from the Ground Up for Melbourne Grand Prix.

A little more than a full year previously at the Vegas Grand Prix, Cadillac were at last granted the official approval as the world of Formula One's newest participant for the 2026 season. Building the organization from scratch has involved a intense work rate that the team boss, Graeme Lowdon, has equated to the NASA lunar mission. As the sport converges on Las Vegas this weekend, Cadillac know the deadline is approaching.

The Race Against Time to Australia

At the last event of the season to be staged in the US, with around 100 days to go before they hit the circuit for the inaugural time in Melbourne at the 2026 season opener, Cadillac have come on in leaps and bounds but, in what must seem like a monumental task, they are conscious there will never be adequate time.

The technical director, Nick Chester, joined the embryonic team in early 2023 soon after it was created, when the organization were without even an official entry. He has been at its heart ever since and gets a knowing grin when considering the ride.

“You might get a brief moment thinking back at what the team has achieved and think: ‘Wow, what an achievement what we have built in a short three-year period,’” he says. “Then the next minute you consider: ‘Yes, we’ve still got quite a lot to do.’”

A One-of-a-Kind Opportunity

The CTO achieved victories at Renault in Fernando Alonso’s title-winning seasons of 2005 and 2006 and was in command of engineering strategy at the recently formed Mercedes-Benz Formula E team, but no other project has quite compared with the mission of bringing the quintessentially American Cadillac marque, a works entry backed by the corporate entity, General Motors, into F1.

“Establishing an Formula One team from the ground up, when are you ever going to get a chance to do that?” he observes. “It's unparalleled. In an existing team you won't have the possibility to transform team culture.”

With each passing day that elapses thoughts are more focused on the impending moment of truth in Australia and goals are being managed.

“You have to assume that a brand-new squad entering the sport is probably going to finish last but just making it to the starting line will be an achievement in itself,” the team principal stated this year and while Nick Chester shared this view he felt the organization had a point to prove as well.
“The initial objective we want to show is that we should be there,” he emphasizes. “So that we arrive and we perform competently. We aim to demonstrate that we are a serious contender executing the proper actions on the circuit. After we’ve shown that we’re really credible, then we want to show improvement after that.”

Racing Talent and Team Building Drive

In the summer they signed Sergio Perez and Valtteri as their pilots for 2026, a pair notable for their vast knowledge in competing at the sharp end in two top-tier teams, Red Bull and Mercedes-AMG, and Valtteri Bottas expressed the mood of determined optimism.

“Certainly, we are pragmatic,” Bottas stated. “There’s going to be a huge amount of work to do, and we expect probably a difficult start, because this is Formula One. But our goal isn't to finish last. In my view with this structure, with this group, these personnel, it's entirely possible we can't manage to progress rapidly to a competitive level and achieve good results.”

To achieve that goal staff acquisition has been in full swing, with personnel now up to in excess of 400 and planned to hit the target of 600 members quickly. Complementing their current base at Silverstone, the organization are in the process of finishing an HQ at the Fishers location in Indy and there is the General Motors facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they are constructing the center to build the 2029 engine, set for 2029 – for now they will run Ferrari engines – and the aerodynamic facility in Cologne, Germany. It is a complex organization, at odds with the movement in the sport for more centralization, and has inspired the new cultural approach to which Chester referred to.

Space Mission Model

“It's closely based on the Apollo project,” stated Lowdon just before the British GP in July. “We have a clear-eyed view, we know how tough it is. The deadlines, they’re super, super, super short. OK, we aren't launching a lunar mission, but it feels like it sometimes.”

So they have embraced, rather than the traditional management structure, a flat management structure akin to that of the space agency's, where there were a assortment of Apollo teams all working on distinct elements of the project in a variety of locations.

“In a system where you follow a process where someone has a problem and they report it to their supervisor, that manager consults a leader somewhere else, it goes back down the chain, it’s super slow,” notes the CTO. “Therefore we enable staff to really get on with it. Eliminating management approval for all decisions is so much cleaner and more rapid.”

Upcoming Challenges

The effectiveness of this agile methodology will be evaluated in the heat of competition in 2026 and there is no little amount at stake for F1, too. Cadillac have signed as their reserve driver the 25-year-old American Colton Herta
