The speculation about this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team could be building a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities you can achieve by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a clever way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, players can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
