Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the right to challenge particular decisions made by the official, following the system already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
